How to make roll wrapped carbon fiber tube

Pulished on Mar. 17, 2021

Why people buy roll wrapped carbon fiber tubes?

Because they not only offer a beautiful surface but also excellent torsional characteristics, as well as crush strength, and are ideal for high torque applications. This round tubs are ideal for building lightweight frames and structures, tubular vessels, poles, column supports, and any other application where low weight and high stiffness are essential and appearance is also important.

Roll wrapping results in maximum consistency across both carbon fiber and fiberglass tubes.

Usually any wall thickness can be made by changing the number of layers or combining different prepreg thicknesses, Roll wrapping is the preferred process for custom making carbon fiber tubes and producing small runs.

Let's introduce how to make roll wrapped carbon fiber tube:

How to make roll wrapped carbon fiber tubeStep1: Cut prepreg fabric. Cutting the prepreg fabric into patterns with specific fiber orientations according to the requirements of the carbon fiber tube design drawings.

Step2: Stick pattern on the mandrel. Spread resin on the mandrels, then sticks patterns on mandrels by using electric iron, while tearing off the backing paper or film in the backside of the prepreg. Besides the roll wrapping technique. Jinjiuyi Carbon has compression molding and autoclave techniques, we will introduce more next time.

Step 3: Roll Wrap. The patterns are rolled into a mandrel to form the size and shape of each tube.

Step 4: Wrap plastic film. Wrap a layer of transparent opp plastic tape on the surface of the rolled carbon tube, and tightly wrap the carbon cloth through the tension of the opp tape to protect and shape.

Step 5: Baking and curing. Hung the carbon tubes in the curing furnace, and the resin will be cured under high temperature to make the tube shape.

Step 6: Demoulding (Extract the mandrel). The mandrel is extracted after curing.

Step 7: Remove the opp plastic film. Peel off the opp tape on the carbon tubing by machine or by hand.

Step 8: Surface polishing. Polish the opp marks on the surface of the carbon tube with a belt sander to make the surface smooth.

Step 9: Coating/painting. According to product requirements, spray the corresponding glossy or matte paint on the surface of the carbon tubes.

Step 10: Cutting. Cut carbon fiber tube according to the actual length, and keep the effective length according to the design requirements.

Step 11: QC (quality control). One by one check the surface and measure the inner and outer diameter and length of the carbon fiber tube.

Step 12: Cleaning and packing. After rigorous inspection, qualified products will be cleaned on the surface, and a plastic bag will be put on the outside to avoid friction and scratches during transportation.
